The long-necked beauty that I am
My heart he left bereft
How he fills me with longing for him!
This poem also builds on the word vuchhanamay (he looked at me), from different vantage points, their names rhyming with objects and feelings. And in her desire for a musical effect, sometimes the thoughts are not logically linked. This reinforces the fact that these are songs meant to be sung and therefore full of sweet rhymes scattered over the lines. The music of this festive, celebratory song can only be appreciated in Kashmiriâ The sound that the words make is impossible to bring out in translation:
The delicate beauties are descending
In our yard they come to dance and play!
